The first comparison is between Aspen Dental and Summit Dentistry, both part of the professional category.
Aspen Dental is a good logo because it is minimal and easy to read/interpret. The typeface used is clean and the blue color used is soothing, which can be helpful when dealing with dentists since not too many people enjoy going. Also the small swoosh in the "A" is nice graphic element that helps catch the eye.
The Summit Dentistry logo is not a poorly designed logo, however, it is a bad logo because it gives the illusion of a peace sign, which is irrelevant to dentistry. It may have a "S" obviously for Summit, but it doesn't fit the content. Also, there is way too much type going on underneath. There are too many different typefaces and isn't easily read, especially at a small size.
The second comparison is between Meijer and Dave's Supermarket, both part of the retail category.
The meijer logo is a good logo because it has large, thick, simple letters that are easily read at any size. Red is a very eye catching color and making the dots on the 'i' and 'j' blue helps break up all that red so it's not over-powering. This would be very successful as a letterhead, which helps makes this a good logo. Typically less is more.
The Dave's Markets logo, however, is a bad logo. There is way too much going on here. The typefaces and spacing used makes it difficult to read. The red was a smart choice because of it's eye catching quality, but doesn't work in this case. The checked pattern in the circle is doing nothing for this logo. It makes it too busy and hard to read the 'Markets'. The yellow banner doesn't help either. It's drawing unwanted attention away from the name. there are just too many elements in this logo.
The third comparison is between First Energy and Tacoma Electric, both of which are a part of the service category.
The First Energy logo is a good logo because it is clean and the typeface is easy to read. The dot on the 'i' was taken out which is a nice touch to the logo. The blue swoosh gives the idea that the company is swift and fast in its services.
The Tacoma Electric logo is a bad logo because the typeface used isn't successful. The stacking of the type makes it look like there is more type than there really is and makes it look busy. Also the yellow lightning strike in the black box seems distracting. I understand the concept, being electric lighting up the blackness, however, it could have been used more successfully. The yellow lightning strikes through the 'A's' is a nice graphic element which helps bring attention to the name, but in all, the logo is too busy and the graphic and type don't work well together.
The fourth comparison is between the Seattle Humane Society and Mutt Cats, both of which are part of the non-profit category.
The Seattle Humane Society logo is a good logo because it is friendly looking. Turning the paw into a heart was a good idea because it shows that they are loving to animals. the typeface is in a hand written font and makes the name seem more personal rather than institutional and cold. However, the 2nd font helps reinforce the fact that they are professionals.
The Mutt Cats logo is anything but professional. It is tacky and the cat doesn't look happy, which tells the client that perhaps the people aren't friendly. The shine and drop shadow on the type isn't necessary and are more elements that detract from the message. Using the paw print as the dot for .com is clever. The colors (blue), on the other hand, makes the place seem cold instead of warm and loving.
The fifth comparison is between MTD and Bad Boys Mowers, both of which are part of the manufacturing category.
The MTD logo is a good logo because it is clean and easy to read and will work at any size. The idea behind the logo is that the 'MTD' is the mower cutting the grass so it makes sense to have the bar containing "For A Growing World" be green. And to reinforce that idea they have included some blades of grass on the right.
The Bad Boy Mowers logo is a bad logo because it is too busy and the typeface can be hard to read at a small size. Also the oval with a checkered look to it seems irrelevant. Are they trying to race the mowers? And the bulldog is irrelevant as well because it nothing to do with mowers. It's not like their name is Bad Dog Mowers; that would be more understandable. It's hard to take this company seriously because their logo is not professional.
